Undergraduate Programme
The academic programmes leading to Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Arts Honours degrees at the FAC are of three years and four years durations respectively, and conducted under semester based credit unit system. The curriculum of the FAC is revised to suit the dynamic needs in the field of Humanities and Social Sciences and to the rapid changes taking place in technological transformation in the global academic scenario. In this perspective, revision of the curriculum of the entire undergraduate degree programme for the FAC has been tabled using Student Centered Learning (SCL) and outcome based assessment method.
Considering the importance of English Language (EL) and Information Technology (IT) in higher learning and job opportunities, the general and special degree students are
required to improve their EL, IT, and mathematical skills. The EL skill programme is intended to improve reading, writing, listening, and speaking abilities of students in the English language for all degree programs. The mathematical skill programme is provided to acquire logical thinking. The IT skill programme is helpful to students who are not familiar with basic IT skill.
Each academic year consists of two semesters and each semester comprises of fifteen (15) weeks inclusive of seventy five (75) working days of academic activities. Each course is taught and assessed basing on the SCL within the same semester. The three years B.A degree programme (Level 5 - SLQF) comprises of six semesters and six endsemester examinations, and the four years Honours degree programme (Level 6-SLQF) comprises of eight semesters and eight end- semester examinations.
Bachelor of Arts (B. A.) Degree Programme – Level 5 – SLQF
The Degree programme leading to the B.A degree of the FAC is offered for three (3) years duration and conducted under semester credit unit and SCL assessment based system with six semesters.
All courses within the structure of B.A. degree become an integral part of the overall educational experience. The core courses will be relevant to an individual’s interests. Students are encouraged to consider that the core course strength is useful to their current interests and goals, and students are also made to be sure that the core course selections are counterpart of the academic requirements of a student’s Honours degree programmes.
The courses offered in the list of core courses for the B.A. degree are compulsory whereas a student has the freedom to select the core course for B.A degree programme offered by ten departments and two disciplines (E.g. Tamil, Geography, and Economics whereas Political Science, Geography and Economics are the core subjects of choice).A student should complete a minimum 90 credit units comprising the core courses 60 credit, ancillary courses 18 credits, optional courses 09 credits and internship training 03 credits during the six semesters (three academic years) for the B.A. degree programme
Bachelor of Arts Honours (B. A.Hons) Degree Programmes- Level 6 – SLQF
The Degree program leading to the B.A Honours degree in the FAC is offered for four (4) years duration and conducted under a semester credit unit and SCL assessment based system with eight semesters. At the beginning of the 2nd year of study, a student who is interested in the field of specialization should apply to follow a Honours degree programme from a respective department / discipline.
All courses within the structure of Honours degree become an integral part of the overall specialization field experience. The field of Honours degree will be relevant to an individual’s interest. Students are encouraged to consider that field of specialization strength is useful to their knowledge hub and job market.
The Honours degree courses are offered in the list of core courses. Honours degree courses offered by the respective department and discipline can be selected from the list of core courses. A student should complete a minimum 120 credit units comprising the core courses 81 credit, ancillary courses 18 credit, optional courses 12 credit, Dissertation 06 credit and internship training 03 credit during the eight semester (four academicyears) for the Honours degree programme.
