Welcome to Department of Philosophy & Value Studies .

The Department of Philosophy &Value Studies has been established as a separate department on 02.01.2017 in the Faculty of Arts & culture, Eastern university, Sri Lanka and before this, it functioned as Discipline of Philosophy under the Department of Social Sciences since 1991. Philosophy critically examines all assumptions and principles of any kind of knowledge systems in the world. Philosophy as the multi-disciplinary approach helps us to achieve happiness of Individuals and society. Creating a perfect human being is the significant task of philosophy.

The Course of the Programme at the Department of Philosophy of Philosophy & Value Studies enables students to acquire competent knowledge in the fields of humanities and sciences. The Students will be educated in the scholarly interpretation of the phenomenon of philosophy and the world’s major philosophical traditions. The students will be able to explore in critical thinking, effective communication and research skills in the study of philosophy and contemporary philosophical issues in the world.

Objectives

  • To advance understanding and appreciation of the importance and value of well-founded knowledge and rigorous inquiry
  • To develop and promote argumentative and analytic skills needed for effective reasoning, efficient communication, and the preservation of high standards for knowledge claims
  • To examine and critically assess normative standards governing social relations, practices, and institutions, including a wide range of human activities dependent upon value judgments
  • To deepen and encourage students’ understanding and life -long pursuit of the uniquely reflective activity of philosophical inquiry
  • To acquire the knowledge of problems and sufferings of humanity
  • To reduce selfish, greedy and dominating motives and attitudes
  • To make morally and intellectually sound persons conducive to wellbeing of humanity
    Intended Learning Out comes

After completion of the Programme the students will able to:

  • identify the salient philosophical ideas and concepts in the major philosophical traditions
  • construct sound arguments and demonstrate valid reasoning to support assertions
  • make careful selection and presentation of evidences and arguments to support assertions, and (when applicable) include carefully constructed refutations of the opposing view
  • demonstrate good structure, succinct expression of ideas and superb writing skills understandings of specific periods of history of philosophy, specific major current trends of twentieth century philosophical investigation, some specific methodologies employed by philosophers
  • expose and evaluate the issues of culture, ethics, politics, gender, and environment, etc.
  • cultivate a global perspective and critically assess normative standards governing social relations, practices, and institutions, including a wide range of human activities dependent upon value judgments
  • realize the meaning of life and the world philosophically
  • work for wellbeing of all living being including environment as well as human beings
